The Underground Citadel of Verdun is a history museum dedicated to the First World War, located in Verdun in the Meuse department. The site occupies the underground galleries of the historic citadel, where soldiers circulated during the 1916 battle. The visitor route was completely redesigned in 2021 and offers an immersive experience combining walks on foot and rides in cable-guided cabins, enhanced by an augmented reality helmet recounting the stories of soldiers from that era. The museum is part of a larger heritage complex that includes the Douaumont Ossuary, the forts of Douaumont and Vaux, as well as other memorial sites on the Verdun battlefield. A visit requires warm clothing, as the temperature in the galleries does not exceed 8°C, and is only accessible from age 8 onwards.
