The Sundgau Museum, established in Altkirch in the Upper Rhine, has occupied since 1952 a 16th-century Renaissance building that formerly served as the residence of the Bailiff of the Habsburg seigneury. Founded in 1877 by Gustave Kubler, the museum preserves collections of mineralogy, fossils and prehistory, as well as a collection of Gallo-Roman and Merovingian objects. The galleries also present the history, geography and local customs through furniture, Sundgau costumes, faience stoves and various pieces of arts and traditions. A Fine Arts department exhibits paintings by notable Alsatian artists and sculptures, notably works by Jean-Jacques Henner, a painter from the region. The building itself, remarkable for its architecture with turret, spiral staircase, diamond-paned windows and glazed tile roof, constitutes a significant architectural testimony to Rhineland Renaissance.
