Located in the Bas-Rhin department of Grand Est in northeastern France, this site encompasses the Grande-île (Grand Island) and the Neustadt (New Town) districts of Strasbourg. The Grande-île, encircled by branches of the Ill River, preserves a remarkable medieval urban layout with narrow streets, timber-framed houses, and the Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame, which dominates the skyline. The Neustadt represents a distinct period of urban development from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting the city's expansion under German rule. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 for the Grande-île's outstanding medieval architecture and urban structure, with the inscription extended in 2017 to include the Neustadt as an exceptional example of urban planning from the Belle Époque and Wilhelmine periods. Together, these two districts illustrate the historical and architectural continuity of Strasbourg from the Middle Ages to the modern era, demonstrating the city's role as a major European cultural and commercial center.
