The Museum of the War of 1870 and the Annexation is a history museum located in Gravelotte, in Moselle, on the site of former battlefields. Founded in the aftermath of the Franco-Prussian War by Elisabeth and Viktor Erpeldinger to preserve the memory of the conflict, it has undergone several phases: initial creation in 1875 under the name Kriegsmuseum, closure and restoration during the twentieth century, then complete reconstruction in 2014 according to an architectural project designed by Bruno Mader and Pierre Verger. The permanent exhibition, developed over 900 m², presents approximately 6,000 objects – uniforms, weapons, period documents, photographs and testimonies – that recount the major battles of 1870, the siege of Metz, daily life under German administration and the memory of the conflict through to the First World War. Recognized, it is managed by the Moselle Department and offers a historical approach to the Franco-Prussian conflict and its lasting consequences for Moselle territory and regional identity.
