Located in the city of Nîmes in the Gard department of the Occitanie region, this Roman temple represents one of the best-preserved examples of Augustan architecture from the 1st century CE. Built during the reign of Augustus, the structure exemplifies Classical proportions and construction techniques that influenced architectural traditions throughout subsequent centuries. The building features a distinctive rectangular plan with a deep portico and engaged columns, characteristics that defined the Roman temple typology of its period. Its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 recognises its outstanding universal value as a testament to Roman engineering and aesthetic achievement, as well as its significant influence on European architectural practice from the Renaissance onwards. The temple's survival through centuries of changing uses and political upheaval demonstrates the robustness of Roman construction methods and the site's enduring cultural importance within the European architectural heritage.
