Located in Avignon in the Vaucluse department of southeastern France, this ensemble of medieval monuments represents a significant chapter in European religious and political history. The site encompasses the Papal Palace, one of the largest Gothic palaces constructed in the 14th century when the papacy relocated from Rome, along with the associated Episcopal ensemble comprising the cathedral, bishop's palace, and fortifications. The celebrated Avignon Bridge, partially surviving from the 12th century, remains an iconic landmark of the medieval city. The inscribed property was recognized for its outstanding testimony to papal power during the Avignon papacy period and for its exceptional architectural and urban planning qualities. The unified walled city preserves the medieval street layout and demonstrates the integration of religious, administrative, and civic structures within a fortified urban context. Together, these monuments illustrate the artistic and architectural achievements of the medieval period in southern France.
