Located near Vers-Pont-du-Gard in the Gard department of Occitanie, this Roman aqueduct stands as a significant example of civil engineering from the 1st century CE. Built to transport water across the Gardon River valley to the city of Nîmes, the structure comprises three tiers of arches constructed in the local limestone, demonstrating the technical mastery of Roman architects and builders. The aqueduct was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985 in recognition of its outstanding testimony to Roman construction techniques and hydraulic engineering. Spanning approximately 360 meters in length, the monument represents the exceptional preservation of an ancient infrastructure system that functioned for centuries. The site's architectural design, combining functionality with monumental proportions, illustrates the sophistication of Roman administrative and engineering practices during the Imperial period. Today, the aqueduct remains one of the most substantial surviving structures from Roman antiquity in France.
