The Museum of Natural History and Prehistory of Nîmes, inaugurated in 1895, is ranked 6th nationally for the richness of its collections. It preserves more than 700,000 specimens covering geology, mineralogy, prehistory, ethnology, zoology, botany and osteology. Four permanent exhibition spaces allow visitors to discover the geological history of southern France, traces of the first humans in the Gard region, cultures of Africa and Oceania, as well as local and exotic zoology. Housed around a cloister and a 17th-century chapel, the museum regularly offers temporary exhibitions, scientific workshops and hosts major national cultural events. Its collections, gathered since 1871 by the Society for the Study of Natural Sciences of Nîmes and Gard, constitute a collection documenting both natural history and human cultures.
