The Museum of Old Nîmes is located on the ground floor of the former episcopal palace, a classical building constructed between the late 17th and early 18th centuries in the heart of Nîmes' historic district. Created in 1921 at the initiative of the municipal commission for archaeology and local history, it brings together local history collections covering the period from the Middle Ages to the present day, enriched with decorative arts, graphic arts and folk objects. The collections bear witness to Nîmes' activities and its territory, with particular emphasis on the textile industry that made the city famous, from textiles to the serge of Nîmes. The museum also offers varied activities including guided tours, plastic arts workshops, craft demonstrations and lectures, intended for all audiences. Labeled as a museum within the meaning of the Heritage Code since 2003, it is part of the continuity of local history museums in southern France.
