Theatre and Its Surroundings and the Triumphal Arch of Orange

Located in the town of Orange in the Vaucluse department of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, this site comprises two outstanding monuments from the Roman period. The ancient theatre, built in the 1st century CE, is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in existence, featuring an intact stage wall and extensive seating areas. The Triumphal Arch, also from the 1st century CE, stands at the northern entrance to the city and displays relief sculptures depicting military and political scenes. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981 for its exceptional testimony to Roman architectural and engineering practices, as well as its historical significance as evidence of Roman urban planning and commemoration. The monuments are distinguished by their state of preservation and their capacity to illustrate the grandeur of Roman public buildings and civic life. Together, these structures provide invaluable insight into the cultural and social organization of a Roman provincial settlement.
