Yonne: Museums, Galleries and Heritage in Burgundy

Yonne sits in the western part of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, between Paris and Dijon, and its cultural landscape reflects this in-between position: monastic heritage, rural craft traditions and a scattering of artist studios across small towns and villages.

The départment's largest towns, Auxerre and Sens, each hold municipal museums with distinct focuses. The Muséum d'Auxerre covers natural history, while the Musée Leblanc-Duvernoy in the same city is dedicated to fine and decorative arts. In Sens, the Musée de Sens organises its collections around the city's major heritage sites, including its cathedral complex.

Away from the towns, Yonne is dotted with village museums built around a single collection or figure: faience and ceramics in Villiers-Saint-Benoît, naive art in Noyers, chocolate moulds near Auxerre, or a private sculpture collection at a converted mill in Escolives-Sainte-Camille.

Vézelay is the département's most visited site: its basilica and hilltop setting form the Basilique et colline de Vézelay, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a former pilgrimage stop on the route to Santiago de Compostela. The village also houses the Musée Zervos - Maison Romain Rolland, a modern art collection assembled by the critic Christian Zervos and displayed in the house where writer Romain Rolland once lived.

Avallon, a fortified hill town on the edge of the Morvan, combines two museums within its historic core: the Musée du Costume, set in a 17th-century townhouse and known for its annual fashion history exhibition, and the Musée de l'Avallonnais Jean Després, occupying a former college building since 1971.

Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye, birthplace of the writer Colette, holds two related sites: La maison de Colette, installed in the former château of Victor Gandrille, and the Musée Colette, a literary museum awarded the Musée de France label in 2003. Both anchor a small literary tourism circuit in this rural corner of Puisaye.

Noyers, classified among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, pairs its half-timbered streets with the Musée des Arts Naïfs et Populaires de Noyers, spread over three floors of a former college and holding over 150 works of naive, brut and folk art, alongside independent galleries such as La galerie écossaise and the Atelier Véronique Despinois.

The area around Saint-Bris-le-Vineux and Irancy, vineyard villages close to Auxerre, hosts two spaces run by the same artist, Georges Hosotte: the Galerie d'Art Chapelle Bailly - Georges Hosotte and L'Atelier d'Irancy - Georges Hosotte.

Auxerre itself concentrates several private galleries within its old town, including Galerie d'Art Nacivet and Galerie d'art et atelier L'Escalier. Joigny, on the Yonne river, contributes Juste1instant and Espace ABI.

For contemporary art specifically, the Centre Régional d'Art Contemporain in Fontenoy and the Acanthe Villages d'Artistes in La Ferté-Loupière extend the département's gallery network into smaller villages, following a pattern typical of Yonne where art spaces often occupy former shops, chapels or private houses rather than purpose-built venues.
