Situated in the Yonne department of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, this hilltop sanctuary comprises a Romanesque basilica and the medieval settlement clustered around it. The church, dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, became one of the major pilgrimage sites of medieval Europe and served as a departure point for journeys to Santiago de Compostela. The basilica exemplifies the architectural and sculptural achievements of the Romanesque period, with particular distinction in its interior proportions and decorative elements. The site's inscription recognises both the outstanding artistic and architectural value of the church and its substantial role in medieval religious and cultural history. The physical integration of the church with the village structures on the hillside creates a cohesive medieval landscape that reflects the symbiotic relationship between religious institutions and settlement patterns of the period.
