The Musée de l'Avallonnais Jean Després, located in Avallon in the Yonne, is an institution. Founded in 1862 by the Société d'Études d'Avallon, it has occupied since 1971 the former college in the historic district and houses collections of local archaeology, paintings, drawings, engravings and sculptures. The museum gives particular prominence to the goldsmithing and jewelry of Jean Després, a twentieth-century artist associated with modernism and Art Deco, who lived in Avallon. An important section is devoted to the Yao collection, comprising objects, costumes, jewelry and elements of Yao Taoism. The collections reflect the commitment of generations of local scholars and collectors in building a historical and ethnographic heritage.
