Maine-et-Loire: Museums, Galleries and Troglodyte Art

Maine-et-Loire sits within the Pays-de-la-Loire region, along a stretch of the Loire valley whose white tuffeau stone has determined much of the area's cultural landscape. This soft limestone, quarried for centuries to build châteaux and abbeys, left behind networks of caves that later became dwellings, workshops and, more recently, exhibition spaces for sculpture.

Angers, the departmental capital, concentrates the largest institutions: the Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angers, the Musée Jean-Lurçat et de la tapisserie contemporaine, and the Galerie David d'Angers, housed in the Toussaint abbey church, dedicated to the sculptor Pierre-Jean David.

Further south, Saumur and its surrounding villages hold a distinctive cluster of troglodyte art sites, including Pierre et Lumière, La Cave aux Sculptures, and the L'Hélice Terrestre de l'Orbière, all carved into former quarry caves.

Angers' historic center groups several museums within walking distance of the castle. The Musée des Beaux-Arts d'Angers occupies the Logis Barrault, while the Musée Pincé and the Muséum des sciences naturelles sit nearby, the latter spread across the Demarie-Valentin mansion and the former episcopal palace.

Contemporary art galleries cluster around Angers as well: Galerie d'art AAA, Galerie d'art Carré d'artistes, Galerie LTK, Arts & Co and Galerie Sajo together form a dense gallery district well suited to an afternoon of browsing between two museum visits.

Just outside Angers, the villages along the Loire host their own artist studios and small galleries, from Rive d'Arts - pôle création in Les Ponts-de-Cé to Galerie Confluence and la galerie troismurs+ in Savennières.

Two 19th- and early 20th-century sculptors born or trained in the region have dedicated museums: David d'Angers (1788-1856), whose plasters and marbles fill the Galerie David d'Angers, and Jules Desbois (1851-1935), a former collaborator of Rodin, honored at the Musée Jules-Desbois in Noyant-Villages, which holds around a hundred of his works.

In the 20th century, Jean Lurçat revived tapestry as a contemporary art form after seeing the medieval Apocalypse Tapestry at Angers castle. The Musée Jean-Lurçat et de la tapisserie contemporaine traces this revival, including his own monumental work Le Chant du Monde.

Cholet keeps alive the legacy of another 20th-century figure through the Artothèque François Morellet, dedicated to the geometric abstraction of François Morellet, who was born in the town in 1926.
