Aisne: Museums, Galleries and Heritage in the Heart of Hauts-de-France

Aisne's museum network is unusually diverse for a rural département: it combines writers' birthplaces, war memory sites, industrial heritage and fine art collections. In Saint-Quentin, the Musée des Beaux-Arts Antoine Lécuyer holds an internationally recognized collection of pastel portraits by Maurice-Quentin de La Tour, an 18th-century specialty of the city.

Literary heritage is anchored around Château-Thierry, birthplace of Jean de La Fontaine, whose childhood home is now the Musée Jean de La Fontaine. The town also preserves the Musée du Trésor de l'Hôtel-Dieu, set in a former hospital building.

Further north, the medieval hilltop city of Laon houses the Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie du Pays de Laon, installed since 1891 in a former Templar mansion and gathering more than 2,200 works. Contemporary art, meanwhile, is represented in Soissons at the Musée de Soissons, housed in a 19th-century arsenal.

Château-Thierry concentrates three museums within walking distance of one another, making it the most museum-dense town in the département: the Musée Jean de La Fontaine, the Musée du Trésor de l'Hôtel-Dieu, and nearby galleries such as galerie marie-josé degrelle and Le Silo U1.

Saint-Quentin pairs its fine art museum with an active gallery scene, including Galerie Saint Jacques, 115 Galerie d'art and Ebony Wood's Gallery - EWG.

Laon offers a combined visit of archaeology and crafts: the Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie du Pays de Laon and the Maison des Métiers d'Art de Laon sit within the historic upper town, alongside the Yann Messence Gallery.

Aisne was a major front line during the First World War. The Battle of Belleau Wood in June 1918 is documented at the Musée de la Mémoire de Belleau 1914-1918, in the village of Belleau itself, close to the American cemetery.

Aisne claims an unusual density of literary and artistic births. Jean de La Fontaine was born in Château-Thierry, where his childhood home became the Musée Jean de La Fontaine. Camille Claudel and her brother Paul Claudel have family roots in Villeneuve-sur-Fère, commemorated at the Maison de Camille et Paul Claudel, installed in the former presbytery.

The painter Henri Matisse grew up in Bohain-en-Vermandois, a textile town whose influence on his later use of pattern and color is documented at the Maison familiale d'Henri Matisse. The mathematician and philosopher Condorcet was born in Ribemont, where the Maison natale de Condorcet occupies his birth house.
