The Romain Rolland Museum of Art and History is located in Clamecy, in Nièvre, in a set of historic buildings comprising the 17th-century Hôtel du Duc de Bellegarde, the birthplace of writer Romain Rolland, and a contemporary extension. Labeled as a House of Illustrious Figures, it preserves Gallo-Roman and Merovingian archaeological collections, paintings and sculptures from the 16th to 20th centuries, as well as an exceptional collection of posters by poster artist Charles Loupot. The museum also presents antique earthenware from local manufacturers and memorabilia related to Romain Rolland, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, supplemented by materials documenting the historical activity of timber floating. Audiovisual presentations accompany visits to the various sections.
