The Auguste Grasset Museum is a museum located in Varzy in Nièvre, in a rural area. Initially established by Auguste Grasset from Châtillon starting in 1862, it houses the collections of an eclectic enthusiast who juxtaposes antiquities, art objects, sculptures and paintings from the Middle Ages to the pre-Impressionists. Presented since 1993 in vast premises, the museum organizes its collections over three levels around a contemporary hall: an important Egyptian collection from Antiquity, weapons and ornaments from the South Pacific, a remarkable series of Nivernais earthenware including an equestrian Saint-Eustache dating from 1734, as well as a Music Room dedicated to instruments from the 17th to 19th centuries. The museum also curates a chronological display combining fine arts and a room dedicated to the Varzy painter Rex-Barrat. It offers temporary exhibitions, educational programs and discussions around works of art, functioning as a collector's cabinet bringing together curiosities and coherent collections.
