The Château Fort Musée Pyrénéen of Lourdes occupies a medieval fortress that successively served as a countly residence, military stronghold, and royal prison. The Pyrenean museum, founded in 1921 by Louis and Margalide Le Bondidier, offers an ethnographic and fine arts collection devoted to the history of the Pyrenees and the Pyrenean movement, which views the mountain experience as inseparable from aesthetic and cultural emotion. The castle grounds preserve defensive architecture that overlooks the city of Lourdes and the Sanctuary. The site also includes a botanical garden landscaped with sculptures and scale models of Pyrenean valley architecture. The museum offers self-guided and guided tours, as well as workshops and regular thematic events.
