The departmental museum Georges de La Tour, located in Vic-sur-Seille in Moselle, is dedicated to the 17th-century Lorraine painter born in this same town. Housed in a contemporary building since the early 2000s, the museum contains nearly 200 works arranged chronologically from the 17th to the 20th century, including two major masterpieces by Georges de La Tour: Saint John the Baptist in the Desert and Profile of a Woman. The collection is notably enriched by the donation of the Thuillier brothers, art historians and collectors, comprising 82 paintings by French and European masters. The museum offers an exploration of this artist's artistic world—an artist rediscovered in the 20th century and recognized as one of the greatest masters of French painting for his mastery of chiaroscuro and his intimate scenes illuminated with particular spiritual depth.
