The Departmental Salt Museum is located in the Porte de France, a remnant of 17th-century Vauban fortifications in Marsal, Moselle. Labeled as a "Museum of France" since 2003, it traces the history of salt exploitation in the Seille valley from the Iron Age to the 18th century. The museum presents permanent collections renovated in 2019, enriched by partnerships with prestigious institutions such as the National Archaeology Museum of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the British Museum. Its collections include notably Celtic objects, Merovingian elements and remarkable pieces such as the Leimersheim torque and a 14th-century reliquary. The visiting route offers an immersion into the economic, political and social role of salt, nicknamed "white gold," which shaped the territory of Saulnois for more than three millennia.
