Saint-Étienne built its identity on coal, arms manufacturing and ribbon weaving, and this legacy is preserved at the Musée de la Mine - Couriot, a site museum set directly on a former mining pithead, and at the Musée d'Art et d'Industrie de Saint-Etienne, which traces the city's manufacturing heritage in arms, cycles and ribbons.
