Charente: Art, Comic Strips and Cognac Heritage in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Angoulême, the departmental capital, anchors Charente's cultural identity around comic strip art. The Musée de la Bande Dessinée forms one of the two main components of the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image, a public institution dedicated to comic art in all its forms.

The city's museum offer extends beyond comics through the MAAM network (Musées d'Angoulême et Archives Municipales), which includes the Musée d'Angoulême, holding a broad collection spanning several historical periods, and the Musée du Papier, tracing the region's industrial papermaking history and its links to graphic arts.

Further south, Cognac and Jarnac form a second cultural axis built around one of France's most famous spirits and one of its recent presidents. The musée des savoir-faire du cognac in Cognac details the production techniques behind the region's namesake spirit, while Jarnac preserves the memory of François Mitterrand through both his Maison Natale de François Mitterrand and the Musée François Mitterrand, installed in a former Bisquit Dubouché cognac warehouse.

Angoulême concentrates most of Charente's major institutions within walking distance of each other. Contemporary art has its dedicated space at the Frac Poitou-Charentes, a regional contemporary art fund offering free admission to its exhibitions, while the city's wartime history is documented at the Espace mémoriel de la Résistance et de la Déportation, overseen by the departmental council.

Archaeological findings from the region are held by the Société Archéologique et Historique de la Charente, a historic learned society whose collections are recognized under French heritage law.

In eastern Charente, Montbron offers an unexpected pairing: prehistoric interpretation at the Espace Préhistoire André Debénath, run by the association Préhistoire en Tardoire, sits alongside the MAMMA Jorge Dubon – Musée d'Art Moderne Mexicain d'Aquitaine, a museum devoted entirely to the contemporary sculpture of a single Mexican artist.

Alongside its institutional museums, Charente hosts a network of independent galleries spread across both larger towns and small villages. In Angoulême, La Petite Boutique and Showroom 57 present work from regional artists and designers.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, one of France's officially listed most beautiful villages, has two small galleries worth a detour: Marigami et Cie and Chez Marguerite.

Other notable spaces include Galerie et école d'art Licorne in Soyaux, which combines exhibition space with art instruction; Wonderwall 2 in Cognac; Maison Marguerite in Saint-Cybardeaux; and the Galerie des Arts in Terres de Haute Charente.
