Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe

This natural site comprises remnants of primeval European beech forests, representing some of the most intact examples of this forest ecosystem across the continent. The property was successively inscribed between 2007 and 2021, with additions expanding its geographical scope to include multiple locations in the Carpathian Mountains and other European regions. The Baerenthal site in the Moselle department of Grand Est, France, forms part of this transnational serial property that demonstrates the ecological development and biodiversity of European beech-dominated forests in their natural state. These forests are characterized by their old-growth structure, with diverse layers of vegetation and complex ecological processes that have developed over centuries with minimal human intervention. The sites possess exceptional scientific value for understanding forest dynamics, species composition, and the natural regeneration patterns of beech ecosystems.
