Chaîne des Puys – Limagne Fault Tectonic Arena
Orcines · Puy-de-Dôme · Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes
Located in the Puy-de-Dôme department of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, this natural site comprises a chain of young volcanic cones and the associated Limagne Fault, representing an exceptional geological teaching resource for understanding volcanism and tectonics. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018 for its outstanding geological significance, featuring well-preserved volcanic formations that demonstrate the processes of continental rifting and monogenetic volcanism. The landscape is visually characterized by approximately 80 puys, or small volcanic cones, aligned along the fault zone and displaying varied morphological features that reflect different eruption styles. The geological formations present here have been fundamental to the development of modern volcanology and the understanding of fault systems in continental settings. The area's accessibility and excellent preservation of geological structures make it a significant natural laboratory for scientific research and education in Earth sciences.
