This cultural property encompasses the French section of the pilgrimage routes leading to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. The routes were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 as outstanding examples of cultural exchange and spiritual devotion during the medieval period. The French network consists of four main routes that converge at the Pyrenees, with Le Puy-en-Velay serving as one of the primary starting points in the Haute-Loire department of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. These routes are distinguished by their remarkable concentration of architectural and archaeological heritage, including churches, monasteries, bridges, and fortifications that have guided pilgrims for centuries. The pathways traverse diverse landscapes and connect significant Romanesque churches that marked stages of the journey. The routes represent an exceptional testimony to medieval religious practice and the historical importance of pilgrimage as a form of cultural and spiritual exchange across Europe.
