Musée
Hirson · Aisne · Hauts-de-France
The Alfred Desmasures Museum and Documentation Center is located in Hirson, in the Aisne department, in an 18th-century building erected on the foundations of a former feudal castle. The museum presents collections covering local and regional history from prehistoric times to the contemporary period, with particular emphasis on the history of Hirson from 1870 onwards and the Belle Époque. An important section is devoted to Auguste Labouret, a master glassmaker and master mosaicist of the 20th century, as well as to the railway history of the city between 1869 and 1969. The museum also includes a documentation center named after Alfred Desmasures, a writer and founder of the first local newspaper, which provides researchers and local history enthusiasts with archives, books, and documents. Finally, two rooms are dedicated to the impact of the two World Wars on the region, from 1914 to 1945.
