Musée
Buironfosse · Aisne · Hauts-de-France

The Sabot Museum of Buironfosse, located in Thiérache in the Aisne department, is dedicated to the history of sabot-making, the dominant trade in the region during the 19th century. Founded in 1986 by a volunteer association, the museum distinguishes itself through its living approach: sabots manufactured on-site, functioning machinery and historical reconstructions rather than static exhibitions alone. The collections comprise 556 sabots and include the Baudin room with its 1930s machinery, an automaton theater, and a life-sized recreated sabot-makers' hut. The foresters' space, arranged by the volunteers themselves, presents the Thiérache forest ecosystem: charcoal kilns, draft animals, and wooden craft tools. The museum caters to families and school groups, offering guided tours and seasonal activities.
