History & HeritageMusée Gallo-romain Vesunna
Périgueux · Dordogne · Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Vesunna is a Gallo-Roman museum site located in Périgueux, in Dordogne. It is built on the remains of a large Gallo-Roman residence, the domus of Vésone, whose ruins form the heart of the site. The museum presents archaeological collections from excavations, supplemented by scale models and educational devices, which testify to the ancient city and the lifestyles of its inhabitants, the Petrucores. The contemporary architecture of the building was designed by Jean Nouvel, offering a contrast between current design and ancient remains. In the site's park stands the Tower of Vésone, an imposing remnant of an ancient Gallo-Roman temple. Vesunna offers a unique approach in Europe combining archaeology, museography, and architecture.
