Overview

Numbers follow the order of the route, day by day — the dashed line is indicative, not a precise driving route.

1

Day 1

Périgueux, the Gallo-Roman city

First stop at Vesunna, a Jean Nouvel-designed site-museum built around the remains of a Gallo-Roman villa, with models and displays explaining everyday life among the Petrocorii — then a walk past Saint-Front Cathedral and its five Byzantine domes, unique in France, before setting off for the Périgord Noir.

3

Day 3

Les Milandes and Marqueyssac, legend and hanging gardens

The Renaissance Château des Milandes, former home of Joséphine Baker, where falconry displays send around a dozen birds of prey soaring above its towers — then the gardens of Marqueyssac, six kilometres of paths lined with hand-clipped century-old box hedges, leading to a belvedere overlooking the valley.

4

Day 4

Commarque, the castle swallowed by the forest

A different kind of morning in the Vézère valley: the Château de Commarque combines a medieval fortress, a prehistoric cave and troglodyte remains on a single rocky spur, explored freely with an audio guide — enough to fill a whole morning at an easy pace.

5

Day 5

Sarlat and Biron, the old town and the giant of the bastides

Morning through the lanes of Sarlat's old town, with a stop at Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral, spiritual heart of the Périgord Noir; afternoon at the Château de Biron, fourteen buildings layered across nearly a thousand years of history, with a panorama stretching to the Agenais — the final stop before heading home.
