The museum of Boulogne-sur-Mer, founded in 1825, is housed in the comtal castle, a fortress built in 1231 by Count Philip Hurepel. Heir to the cabinet of curiosities of naturalist painter Isidore Leroy de Barde, it preserves over one hundred thousand objects linked to the history of the city and the travels of its collectors and scholars. The collections encompass a broad geographical and chronological spectrum, from ancient Egypt to pre-Columbian Peru, from Alaska to the coasts of the English Channel. The castle itself, built on the remains of Roman fortifications still visible in its underground passages, constitutes the first object of the collection and a major gateway to local history. The establishment offers permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as varied educational activities.
