Overview

Numbers follow the order of the route, day by day — the dashed line is indicative, not a precise driving route.

1

Day 1

Amiens, the Gothic cathedral

First stop at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Amiens, the largest Gothic cathedral in France by volume, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981 for its sculpted 13th-century façade — then the Musée de Picardie, one of the first buildings in France purpose-built as a museum, opened in 1855.

2

Day 2

Amiens, Jules Verne's house

Jules Verne lived in Amiens for thirty-four years, from 1871 to 1905; the Maison à la Tour, which he rented for eighteen years starting in 1882, is now open to the public and traces the writing of the Voyages extraordinaires through his study and library.

3

Day 3

Albert, the Golden Virgin and the trenches

In Albert, the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Brebières, completed in 1897 with a 76-metre bell tower crowned by Albert Roze's gilded statue of the Virgin, was entirely destroyed during the First World War and rebuilt to its original design between 1927 and 1931 — nearby, the Musée Somme 1916, housed in a wartime air-raid shelter, presents reconstructed trenches and traces the battle fought between July and November 1916.

4

Day 4

Péronne, the castle of the Great War

The Château de Péronne, a 13th-century fortress built by Philip Augustus and damaged during the Great War, has housed the Historial de la Grande Guerre since 1992: a contemporary museum designed by Henri-Édouard Ciriani, bringing together some 75,000 original objects and documents on the First World War.
