Allier: Museums, Heritage and Art Galleries

Allier's cultural identity is anchored in two contrasting towns. Moulins, former capital of the Duchy of Bourbon, preserves its ducal past through the Château des ducs de Bourbon, begun under Louis II de Bourbon between 1375 and 1410, and through the Renaissance pavilion housing the Musée Anne-de-Beaujeu, devoted to archaeology, sculpture and fine art collections.

Vichy, meanwhile, owes its urban character to its 19th-century status as a fashionable spa town, an era recognised through the UNESCO inscription Les grandes villes d'eaux d'Europe. This thermal heritage coexists with a lively contemporary art scene, visible in galleries scattered through the city's Napoleon III-era streets.

Beyond these two poles, the department reveals more specialised institutions: the Musée de Glozel in Ferrières-sur-Sichon, tied to one of France's most debated archaeological sites, and Préhistorama, installed in the former railway station of Châtelperron, near the prehistoric site that gave its name to the Châtelperronian culture.

In Moulins, museums cluster within walking distance of one another around the historic center: the CNCS | Centre national du costume et de la scène, dedicated to costumes from theatre, opera and dance, sits alongside the Maison Mantin, a preserved 1893 bourgeois residence, and the Musée de la Visitation, focused on the religious order and its local history.

Vichy's cultural map centers on its Parc des Sources and adjoining streets, where the Musée des arts d'Afrique et d'Asie presents decorative arts, ethnography and religious objects from both continents. Nearby, the Musée Surréaliste Boucheix occupies a former Napoleon III music-hall, the Alhambra, designed by architect Antoine Percilly.

Vichy's gallery district gathers a dense concentration of contemporary art spaces, including Galerie Berthéas, Galerie L'Empreinte, Galerie Stella Art International and Galerie Louis Napoleon, while the nearby town of Cusset hosts Raphael Minot Cré Art eur and Chakicoud - Atelier et Galerie de création textile.

The Irish writer James Joyce spent a little-known stay in the village of Saint-Gérand-le-Puy in December 1939, an episode documented today at the Musée James Joyce.

Painter Josette Bournet (1905–1962) is honored in her native region at the Musée Josette Bournet in Saint-Félix, opened in 2015 by her heirs inside the village château. Writer Charles-Louis Philippe, born in Cérilly, is similarly commemorated through the Musée Charles-Louis Philippe.
