Located in El Salvador, this archaeological site preserves the remains of a pre-Hispanic settlement buried by volcanic ash, offering exceptional insights into daily life in Mesoamerica. The eruption of the Caldera Bajada volcano preserved structures, artifacts, and organic materials in situ, creating a time capsule of domestic, agricultural, and ceremonial spaces. The site's significance lies in its ability to document the material culture and spatial organization of a Maya community with unusual completeness and detail. Characteristic features include residential compounds, storage facilities, and gardens that reveal patterns of settlement and subsistence practices otherwise difficult to discern from archaeological records. The preservation conditions have allowed for the recovery of botanical remains and artifacts that illuminate aspects of pre-Columbian life rarely found at other sites in the region.
