Located in western Honduras near the Guatemalan border, Copán represents one of the most significant centres of Classic Maya civilization. The archaeological site contains extensive remains of pyramids, palaces, courts and residential complexes dating primarily to the Late Classic period. The site is distinguished by its exceptional carved monuments, including stelae and altars decorated with hieroglyphic inscriptions that have provided crucial insights into Maya history, astronomy and royal lineages. The ruins showcase sophisticated architectural planning and artistic achievement characteristic of Maya urban centres, with structures arranged around ceremonial plazas and pyramid complexes. The combination of monumental architecture, artistic sophistication and the wealth of written records preserved in its hieroglyphic texts justifies Copán's recognition as a cultural heritage site of outstanding universal value. The surrounding landscape, situated in a river valley with tropical vegetation, forms an integral part of the archaeological setting.
