Located near Novi Pazar in Serbia, this cultural site encompasses the medieval fortress of Stari Ras and the nearby Sopoćani monastery, representing significant achievements of Serbian medieval civilization. Stari Ras served as the capital of the Serbian medieval state during the 13th and 14th centuries, while Sopoćani monastery was founded in the mid-13th century and became an important religious and cultural center. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 for its outstanding medieval architecture and its role in the development of Serbian Orthodox culture and art. Sopoćani is particularly notable for its well-preserved frescoes, which exemplify the Byzantine artistic tradition as adapted in the Serbian context. The fortress ruins of Stari Ras, positioned on a strategic hill above the Raška River valley, reflect the political importance of the settlement during the medieval period. Together, these monuments constitute essential testimony to the historical and cultural identity of medieval Serbia.
