Located in northeastern Montenegro, this national park encompasses a mountainous region characterized by dramatic limestone formations and deep glacial canyons. The site preserves significant geological features, including the Tara River Canyon, one of Europe's deepest gorges, which showcases evidence of prolonged erosion and glaciation. The landscape supports diverse flora and fauna representative of Mediterranean and Alpine ecosystems, with forests of black pine and spruce distributed across elevations that reach over 2,500 meters. The park's natural systems demonstrate important ecological and hydrological processes, including numerous lakes, rivers, and karst features that contribute to its scientific value. The combination of geological complexity, biodiversity, and intact natural processes formed the basis for its recognition as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site. The region's rugged terrain and pristine conditions have preserved these natural characteristics with minimal human alteration.
