Located on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, this medieval walled city represents a significant example of European urban development from the 13th century onwards. The old town is characterized by its well-preserved defensive walls, grid-pattern streets, and ensemble of religious and civic buildings constructed primarily in stone. The site's architectural heritage reflects the influence of both Venetian and Byzantine cultures, evident in the design of its churches, monasteries, and palaces. The fortified settlement was an important maritime and trading center in the Mediterranean region, and its urban structure demonstrates sophisticated medieval town planning. The historic core, surrounded by impressive ramparts punctuated by towers and gates, has maintained its essential character despite significant damage during the 1990s and subsequent restoration efforts. The combination of architectural integrity and historical significance as a representative medieval Adriatic city justifies its recognition as a cultural heritage site.
