Located in Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany, this archaeological ensemble comprises two interconnected medieval sites that mark the historical frontier between the Scandinavian and Frankish worlds. Hedeby was an important Viking trading settlement established around the 8th century, while the Danevirke is a system of defensive ramparts and fortifications stretching across the Jutland Peninsula. Together, these sites document the complex political and cultural interactions of early medieval Northern Europe, reflecting the strategic importance of the region as a buffer zone and trade corridor. The archaeological remains include settlement structures, defensive constructions, and extensive artifact deposits that provide evidence of commercial networks, military organization, and daily life during the Viking Age and early medieval period. The site's significance lies in its capacity to illuminate the historical development of Scandinavian societies and their relations with continental European powers during this formative era.
