Located in Hamburg, Germany, this cultural site encompasses two significant urban districts that exemplify distinctive periods of European commercial and architectural development. La Speicherstadt, the warehouse district, represents a major example of late 19th-century modernisation in port infrastructure and urban planning, featuring a network of canals lined with Neo-Gothic brick warehouses. Adjacent to it, the Kontorhaus district, with the iconic Chilehaus building as its centrepiece, showcases the architectural innovations of the early 20th century, particularly the Modernist style. The Chilehaus, completed in 1924, is distinguished by its characteristic sharp-angled form and innovative use of reinforced concrete and steel, serving as an office and commercial building. Together, these districts illustrate the transformation of Hamburg into a major international trading centre and reflect the evolving urban design principles that shaped European cities during this period. The site demonstrates the integration of functional architecture with urban development strategies that influenced commercial district planning across Europe.
