Located in southwestern Turkey, this site encompasses the ancient city of Hierapolis and the distinctive white mineral terraces of Pamukkale. The terraces are formed by calcium-rich thermal waters that cascade down the mountainside, creating a series of natural pools and deposits that are unique in their scale and appearance. Hierapolis developed as a prosperous Hellenistic city, subsequently becoming an important Roman and Byzantine center, with substantial remains of temples, theaters, necropolises and other monumental structures reflecting its historical significance. The combination of natural geological phenomena and archaeological remains of an urban settlement spanning multiple periods justifies its inscription as a cultural World Heritage site. The visual contrast between the white travertine formations and the surrounding landscape, along with the preserved architectural elements, makes the site distinctive both as a natural wonder and as evidence of human settlement and urban development across several millennia.
