This World Heritage site comprises two interconnected saltworks located in the Doubs department of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. The Great Saltworks of Salins-les-Bains, in operation since the 12th century, and the Royal Saltworks of Arc-et-Senans, built in the 18th century, together represent the evolution of salt production technology and industrial organization in France. The Royal Saltworks were designed by architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux and exemplify Enlightenment ideals through their geometric layout and rational planning. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its outstanding industrial and architectural heritage, with Arc-et-Senans added in a subsequent extension in 2009. The two saltworks, connected by a historic brine pipeline, document the technological innovations and economic importance of salt production in European history. Their preservation illustrates both the technical sophistication of 18th-century industrial design and the social vision of the Enlightenment period.
