Perched on a rocky tidal island in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, this site combines a fortified medieval abbey with its surrounding maritime and terrestrial landscape. The abbey, begun in the 8th century and substantially developed during the Middle Ages, represents a remarkable achievement of religious and military architecture adapted to its natural setting. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 for its outstanding universal value as a masterpiece of medieval construction and its harmonious integration within a distinctive geographical environment shaped by significant tidal movements. The bay itself, characterized by some of the largest tidal ranges in Europe, has created a unique ecosystem and influenced the site's strategic and spiritual significance throughout history. The architectural ensemble and its dramatic natural setting have made Mont-Saint-Michel a destination of considerable cultural importance since the medieval period.
