Musée
Tiffauges · Vendée · Pays-de-la-Loire

The Tiffauges Clock Museum is housed in a building dating from 1898, a former workshop for the construction of mechanical clocks intended for bell towers, train stations and châteaux. Founded by Louis-Michel Lussault, the last mechanical clock builder in the region, the museum displays approximately fifty clocks and traces the history of this local industry that thrived for 150 years. The collections juxtapose ancient mechanics, with their characteristic sounds, with electronic casings that transformed the sector from the 1980s onwards. The museum also documents the application of the 1850 decree that required municipalities to display the time on public buildings. Located in Tiffauges, in Vendée, near the Bluebeard Castle, the museum occupies a building preserved in its original state.
