The Saumur Castle-Museum is located on a promontory overlooking the Loire in Maine-et-Loire. A representative edifice of medieval princely architecture, the castle has experienced a complex history: founded in the 11th century, it was transformed into a palace by the Anjou family in the 14th and 15th centuries, then fortified with bastions at the end of the 16th century. The museum primarily houses collections of decorative arts and equestrian arts, notably the collection of Count Charles Lair, assembled following the acquisition of the building by the City of Saumur in 1906. Since its conversion into a municipal museum, the castle offers an exceptional panorama over the Loire Valley, inscribed in Unesco's World Heritage.
