The International Centre of the Sea, located in Rochefort in Charente-Maritime, occupies the premises of the Corderie Royale, an ancient rope-making manufactory founded by Louis XIV. The museum presents a permanent exhibition dedicated to the historical techniques of rope-making and the gestures of rope-maker workers, particularly the transformation of hemp. The site also offers temporary exhibitions related to maritime worlds, seamanship workshops, as well as a valued architectural and landscape setting. Organized as a cultural and artistic center, it welcomes artist residencies, conferences and the Mémoires de la Mer festival. Access to the museum includes a visit to the permanent exhibition and a temporary maritime exhibition.
