Musée de l'hôtel de Berny

The Musée de l'Hôtel de Berny, located in Amiens in the Somme, occupies a private mansion built in brick and stone between 1633 and 1634 to serve as the headquarters of the Treasurers of France of the generality of Picardy. The building bears the name of the de Berny family, who acquired it in 1866 and considerably renovated it during the 20th century. Gérard de Berny, the last private owner, assembled there an important collection of local art comprising furniture, ceramics, silverware, tapestries and a rich library, before bequeathing the entire collection to the City upon his death in 1957. Inaugurated in 1966, the museum is dedicated to local art and regional history. The site also includes a set of gardens – a formal French garden, a romantic cloistered garden, a Japanese garden and a Moorish garden – designed by Gérard de Berny and integrated within the perimeter listed as a Historic Monument. The museum, closed since 2006 for safety reasons, underwent major renovations but remains currently closed to the public.
