The Museum of the Kings of Araucania and Patagonia is located in Tourtoirac, in Dordogne, in the childhood home of Orélie-Antoine de Tounens, founder of the Kingdom of Araucania and Patagonia in 1860. The museum traces the history of this kingdom created by the Mapuche in South American territory and of its first king, a French lawyer exiled in France after his capture by Chilean authorities in 1862. The collections include 19th-century historical documents, notably coins, decorations, coats of arms and seals of the kingdom, as well as original archives, portraits of kings and Mapuche chiefs, and historical maps. The museum also presents testimonies about Orélie-Antoine's attempts to reclaim his throne and the persistence of the Royal House in exile. It is a place of memory associated with the singular history of an ephemeral state and South American Mapuche culture.
