Hôtel-Dieu de Cluny

The Hôtel-Dieu de Cluny is a hospital establishment founded in 1625 in the form of the Hôpital Notre-Dame, then rebuilt from 1703 under the impetus of Cardinal de Bouillon, 55th abbot of Cluny. Located in Cluny in Saône-et-Loire, it constitutes today a museum presenting the architectural and furnishing heritage of this former hospital. The collections include a monumental chapel adorned with a painted ceiling and Bouillon's mausoleum in Carrara marble, an apothecary with its pharmaceutical earthenware from the 16th to 19th centuries and its pewter, as well as historic rooms housing furniture, religious ornaments and relics. The site also preserves elements of the Staff of Saint Hugh, dating from the 10th century. Free and guided visits allow visitors to discover these different spaces, including the sick room with its 17th-century woodwork and the administrators' room.
