Galerie des Carrosses
Versailles · Yvelines · Île-de-France
The Carriage Gallery is a site museum located on the ground floor of the Grand Stable of the Palace of Versailles, built by Hardouin-Mansart between 1679 and 1682. It presents a collection of carriages and ceremonial vehicles, consisting mainly of large royal and imperial berlinas, as well as sedan chairs and ornamental sleighs, distributed over approximately 1,000 m² across two vaulted galleries. This collection, assembled by Louis-Philippe from 1831 onwards, constitutes one of the most important in Europe and bears witness to court life and the splendor of the Old Regime, the Empire and the Restoration. Conceived as total works of art, these vehicles combine sculpture, gilding, woodwork and decorative arts, and illustrate major historical events of monarchical France. The museum, reopened to the public in 1997 and redeployed in 2016, also offers a film on the history of horse-drawn vehicles since Louis XIV, as well as educational resources and an audio guide.
