Lieu de mémoire
Versailles · Yvelines · Île-de-France

The Jeu de Paume Hall, located in Versailles in the Yvelines, is a site museum under the national heritage authority. Formerly a royal exercise and recreational hall built in 1686, it became a major place of memory of the French Revolution on June 20, 1789, the day when the deputies of the Third Estate took the oath to give France a written constitution. Transformed into a Revolution museum at the turn of the 20th century by architect Edmond Guillaume, it notably preserves the monumental canvas of the Tennis Court Oath painted by Luc-Olivier Merson based on the preparatory drawing by Jacques-Louis David, as well as busts of major figures of the oath. Restored in 2021-2022, the hall remains freely accessible for independent visits and also welcomes thematic guided tours.
